Amazwi South African Museum of Literature, Literature museum and research library in Makhanda, South Africa

Amazwi South African Museum of Literature is a museum and research center in Makhanda dedicated to South African authors and writing. Its collection includes manuscripts, rare books, and literary works in many of the country's languages.

The institution began in 1972 as a museum focused only on English-language literature in South Africa. It was renamed in 2019 to better represent the writing traditions of all the country's peoples.

The name Amazwi means "voices" in isiZulu, reflecting the 2019 renaming under Minister Nathi Mthethwa to cover all South African languages, not only English. The permanent exhibition "Voices of the Land" traces the country's literature from colonial-era writing to recent work, built around the themes of conflict and the environment and presenting five national languages, with written and oral literature shown alongside audiovisual installations.

The facility operates mainly as a research center, so check ahead about which areas are open to visitors. The library and exhibition spaces offer insights into South African writers and work best during regular visiting hours.

The 2016 building on Worcester Street was certified by the Green Building Council of South Africa as the first five-star Green Star project in the Public & Education Buildings category. Its large green roof over the sealed archives keeps temperatures stable and cuts electricity use.
