BOP Studios, Recording studio in Mahikeng, South Africa
BOP Studios is a recording facility in Mahikeng with three large recording spaces, each equipped with its own control room. The complex spreads across multiple buildings and includes residential cottages alongside dining facilities to support extended sessions.
The studios opened in 1991 under the name Bophuthatswana Recording Studios, funded by the Sefalana Employee Benefits Organization during South Africa's apartheid period. They were built at a time when professional recording facilities were uncommon in the country.
The studios became a gathering place where South African musicians from various genres came to record and collaborate on their work. This made it a significant hub for the country's music scene during its operating years.
The complex provides eighteen cottages for accommodation and a restaurant serving up to 250 people during recording sessions. This allows musicians and crew to stay on site for extended periods without needing to leave the grounds.
The architectural design of the complex forms the shape of a rhinoceros when viewed from above, with Studio 3 representing the animal's head. This unusual design choice often goes unnoticed by visitors at ground level and demonstrates imaginative planning.
