Sani Pass, Mountain pass between KwaZulu-Natal and Lesotho, South Africa
Sani Pass is a mountain pass that connects KwaZulu-Natal to Lesotho via a gravel road winding through high alpine terrain. The route climbs steeply through steep Drakensberg valleys and reaches elevations typical of the southern African highlands.
The pass was developed in 1922 when the Basutoland government established an initial mountain route to link remote settlements. Over time it evolved from a pack animal trail into a more substantial connection between the two territories.
The path was initially used by San people and Bantu communities who established migration routes through the Drakensberg Mountains over centuries.
The road requires high-clearance vehicles due to steep gradients and rough terrain, especially during rainy seasons. Travelers should prepare for challenging driving conditions and carry adequate fuel and water supplies.
Some sections feature particularly extreme gradients that make driving an unforgettable adventure for those who navigate them. The landscape changes dramatically with the seasons, shifting from green grasslands in summer to snow-covered slopes during winter months.
