Kenneth Stainbank Nature Reserve

Kenneth Stainbank Nature Reserve is a protected coastal forest area with 253 hectares of riverine woodland and grassland habitat. The reserve supports populations of zebras, duiker species, and numerous small mammals within its boundaries.

The reserve was established in 1963 when Kenneth Stainbank donated his land for conservation. Coedmore Castle, a stone dwelling built in 1885 by Dering Stainbank, still stands within the property.

Mary Stainbank's artistic legacy lives on through a gallery in the reserve that displays her work from the early 20th century. The site represents how personal passion for art and nature conservation can exist together in one place.

The reserve features 13 kilometers of walking trails with wheelchair-accessible paths from the main parking area and a 10-kilometer mountain bike track available. Arriving early in the day and wearing sturdy footwear is recommended, especially after rainfall when some paths become slippery.

Night drives through the reserve reveal nocturnal animals active after dark, while the dam area serves as a gathering spot for water birds. These contrasting experiences show how the reserve changes dramatically between day and night hours.
