Witbank, Coal mining town in Mpumalanga, South Africa.
Witbank, now called eMalahleni, is a town on the Highveld plateau in Mpumalanga built around coal extraction and power generation. The area contains numerous collieries, major power stations including the Duvha facility, and industrial complexes supporting steel production.
The town originated around 1890 when farmers on the Highveld began mining coal for heating, and railway lines arriving from 1894 onward accelerated growth and industry. Power stations built throughout the 20th century transformed it into a major center for energy generation in South Africa.
The town's official name changed to eMalahleni in 2006, a word meaning 'place of coal' in local Nguni languages, which shows how deeply mining shaped the community's identity and everyday life.
The town sits on major road routes and is easily accessible by car, which is the best way to navigate the area. The Highveld Mall serves as a central hub with shops, restaurants, and facilities for visitors and locals.
Winston Churchill took shelter in a coal mine near the town during the Second Boer War after escaping from prison in Pretoria. This hidden chapter in his adventurous youth makes the area a forgotten piece of broader historical significance.
