Vhembe District Municipality, District municipality in Limpopo, South Africa
Vhembe District Municipality is an administrative area in northern Limpopo Province that borders Zimbabwe, Mozambique, and Botswana. It is governed from Thohoyandou and comprises four local municipalities that provide services to the region.
The municipality was established on December 5, 2000, merging territories from the former Venda Bantustan and portions of the Gazankulu homeland. This consolidation reorganized administrative boundaries following the end of apartheid.
The population speaks mainly Tshivenda and Xitsonga, reflecting the strong presence of Venda and Tsonga communities. These languages shape daily life and local customs throughout the region.
Visitors can access administrative services and local offices in Thohoyandou, which serves as the main administrative hub. The four local municipalities are spread across the territory, making services available at different centers.
The Dzata ruins within Thulamela Local Municipality preserve remains of an 18th-century Venda kingdom capital. This archaeological site reveals the region's former power center and draws those interested in precolonial history.
