Kolwezi, Mining center in Lualaba Province, Democratic Republic of the Congo
Kolwezi is a mining center in Lualaba Province in southeastern Congo, situated on an arid plain with mineral-rich deposits. The city developed where acacia and miombo tree forests once stood before mining reshaped the landscape.
The city was founded in 1938 as headquarters for Union Minière du Haut Katanga and officially received city status in 1971 with Dilala and Manika communes. This establishment marked the transformation of a forest region into a modern mining area.
The center of the city revolves around Rond Point de L'Indépendance, where residents and visitors gather. The different neighborhoods tell stories of mining heritage and continue to shape daily life today.
The city is accessible via the Transafrican Highway 9 and has a railway station with connections to major cities. The airport located to the south is about 6 kilometers away and provides additional travel options.
Lake Nzilo was created by damming the Lualaba River and supplies the region with electricity and water for mining operations. This reservoir is often overlooked, yet plays a crucial role in supporting the local mining industry.
