Ugalla River Forest Reserve, Protected area near Mpanda, Tanzania.
Ugalla River Forest Reserve is a protected area in west-central Tanzania that encompasses Miombo woodlands and open grasslands across a substantial territory. The landscape contains diverse habitats that support varied wildlife species throughout the year.
Originally established as a game reserve, the area received national park status in 2019 to strengthen conservation of the region. This change reflected efforts to expand protection for the natural ecosystems.
The Tanzania National Parks Authority manages this protected space under the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism to preserve natural ecosystems.
The dry season from July to October offers the best conditions for vehicle-based travel into the reserve. Flight access is available year-round but relies on private charter arrangements from nearby towns.
The reserve holds notably high populations of sable and roan antelope that thrive in the woodlands and grasslands. Large crocodiles inhabit the waterways and represent a striking feature of the aquatic environment.
