Rubondo Island National Park

Rubondo Island National Park, National park on Lake Victoria, Tanzania

Rubondo Island National Park is a protected area on Lake Victoria consisting of the main island and eleven smaller islets spread across about 456 square kilometers in the southwestern part of the lake. The park features forests, shorelines, and smaller islands that form a complex ecosystem within the water.

The area was inhabited by the Zinza people until the late 1960s, who grew banana crops there before the region became a protected reserve in 1965. This transition to protected status marked a major shift in how the land was used.

The island holds meaning for communities around Lake Victoria who have depended on its waters for fishing and livelihoods for many generations. Visitors can sense this connection to the land when they move through the park and observe how people have shaped the environment over time.

Getting there requires taking a boat from the mainland, and you need permits issued by Tanzania National Parks Authority before entering. It helps to check entry requirements in advance and plan your stay either in the park or in nearby communities.

Chimpanzees were brought to the island during the 1960s as part of a conservation experiment that established a population on Rubondo. These primates are now part of the wildlife you encounter, offering a rare chance to observe apes in their setting.
