Rubondo Island National Park

Rubondo Island National Park spans 456 square kilometers across the main island and eleven small islets in southwestern Lake Victoria.

The Zinza people inhabited the island until the late 1960s, maintaining banana plantations before the area became a protected reserve in 1965.

The park management collaborates with local communities along Lake Victoria shores to preserve traditional fishing practices and environmental knowledge.

Visitors reach the park via boat transfers from mainland Tanzania, with permits and documentation required for entry through Tanzania National Parks Authority.

Professor Bernhard Grzimek introduced seventeen chimpanzees to the island between 1966 and 1969, establishing a population that grew to forty individuals.
