Alto Ligonya, Mineral site in Zambezia Province, Mozambique
Alto Ligonya is a mineral site in Zambezia Province featuring extensive pegmatite formations containing quartz, beryl, and tourmaline. These deposits spread across mountainous terrain at about 400 meters elevation.
The administrative post emerged during Mozambique's pacification period in 1895 in the northeastern region. Its name comes from the upper Ligonha River.
The region maintains traditional mining methods passed through generations, combining indigenous practices with modern mineral extraction techniques in local communities.
Travel is best between June and October when conditions are most favorable. Access involves flying to Nampula airport and then proceeding overland to the site.
The pegmatite field produced remarkable crystallized minerals from 1930 to 1970, including elbaite, stibiotantalite, and microlite specimens. These rare examples are valued by collectors worldwide.
