Nosy Mangabe, Protected island reserve in Antongil Bay, Madagascar.
Nosy Mangabe is a protected tropical forest island in Antongil Bay that rises steeply from palm-lined beaches. Multiple hiking trails weave through the dense vegetation across the roughly 5 square kilometer area.
Dutch sailors carved inscriptions into the western rocks during the 16th century as they passed through these waters. French traders followed later and established a post that brought European influence to the island.
The name comes from Malagasy words that can mean very blue, very beautiful, or abundance of mangoes. Visitors today still see why locals chose these words when they look at the surrounding water and forest.
Bring your own camping equipment, food, and supplies from the mainland town of Maroantsetra since the island has only basic facilities and no electricity. Boat access is the only way to reach the island, so plan accordingly for a self-sufficient visit.
The island holds the highest concentration of leaf-tailed geckos found anywhere in Madagascar. These hard-to-spot creatures come out at night, and guides can help visitors spot them during evening walks.
