Farquhar Atoll

Farquhar Atoll spans 170 square kilometers in the Indian Ocean, featuring an ear-shaped lagoon measuring 18 kilometers north to south and 9 kilometers east to west.

In 1965, the atoll became part of the British Indian Ocean Territory until 1976, when it returned to Seychelles jurisdiction during the nation's independence.

The Farquhar Island Conservation Centre monitors nesting sea turtles and substantial seabird colonies, including 200,000 pairs of Sooty Terns on Goëlettes Island.

A 1,170-meter paved airfield on North Island connects the atoll to Mahé, while a guest house accommodates visitors during the fishing season from September to April.

Cyclone Fantala in 2016 created an additional island within the atoll, named Banc Fantala, modifying the original geography of ten constitutional islands.
