Cosmoledo

Cosmoledo is an atoll made up of about 23 islands spread across shallow lagoons and reef flats in the Indian Ocean. The entire formation features low sandy islands surrounded by turquoise water.

European sailors discovered this remote location in the 1700s and later used it as a fishing and turtle-hunting base. Operations ended in 1992, after which the atoll became a protected area.

Today the atoll functions as a protected marine reserve where visitors encounter the results of strict conservation rules applied to protect wildlife and coral reefs. The way the islands are managed shows a commitment to preserving this fragile ocean environment.

Reaching the atoll requires planning through an organized operator who provides accommodation on one of the islands. Visits are typically limited to certain months to minimize disruption to wildlife.

The atoll hosts one of the world's largest colonies of red-footed boobies, where thousands of breeding pairs arrive each year to nest. These birds with bright red feet are a defining feature of the islands and draw many visitors.
