Réserve naturelle nationale de l'archipel des Glorieuses

This national nature reserve protects a large marine area in the western Indian Ocean, encompassing several islands and underwater banks with extraordinary ocean life. The protected region consists of islands, coral reefs, and sandbanks that together create a unique habitat for rare marine organisms.

This reserve received its official national status in 2021, replacing an earlier protection designation established in 2012. The stronger legal framework reflects growing recognition of the need to safeguard these valuable marine zones.

The protected territory includes three main zones: Glorioso Island, Banc du Geyser, and Banc de la Cordelière, each maintaining strict regulations against extractive activities.

Access to the reserve is strictly limited since it is a highly protected marine area with only limited activities permitted. Most visitors can only study the region from afar or explore it through scientific programs.

The area serves as a crucial nesting ground for several rare turtle species that arrive to breed and lay their eggs. These breeding sites hold global significance for the survival of these endangered animals.
