Karen, affluent suburb of Nairobi in Kenya

Karen is a residential neighborhood on Nairobi's southwest side, known for spacious homes, mature trees, and peaceful streets lined with well-maintained gardens. The area borders Ngong Forest and contains several attractions including the Karen Blixen Museum, the Giraffe Center, and the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust Elephant Orphanage.

The neighborhood was named after Karen Blixen, a Danish writer who operated a coffee farm there starting in 1917 and shaped the region until the late 1920s. Her former farmhouse was opened as a museum in 1986 and documents the colonial history and her literary legacy.

The neighborhood takes its name from Karen Blixen, a Danish writer who managed a coffee farm here and later gained fame for her literary work. Her former residence and the museum grounds remain central to the area's cultural identity, connecting residents and visitors to Kenya's colonial past.

The area is most easily reached by private transport or organized tours since attractions are spread across the neighborhood. Wear comfortable shoes if you plan to explore walking trails like Oloolua or visit the Giraffe Center.

The Giraffe Center here specifically breeds the endangered Rothschild giraffe and allows visitors the rare chance to hand-feed and touch these animals before some are released back into the wild. Few places worldwide offer such direct interaction with endangered large animals.
