Falaises d'Entrecasteaux

The limestone cliffs extend over 700 meters above sea level along the western coast of Amsterdam Island in the southern Indian Ocean.

Antoine Bruni d'Entrecasteaux, a French naval officer and explorer, discovered and documented these cliffs during his Pacific expedition in the late 18th century.

Research stations near the cliffs contribute to scientific understanding of marine ecosystems and bird populations in the southern Indian Ocean region.

Access to the cliffs requires special permits from French authorities, as Amsterdam Island maintains restricted entry due to its environmental protection status.

The cliffs house one of the largest yellow-nosed albatross colonies worldwide, with over 360 hectares designated as an Important Bird Area.
