Lake Gunung Tujuh is a volcanic crater lake in Kerinci Seblat National Park, situated at 1,950 meters elevation. The water is ringed by seven mountain peaks whose summits range from 2,230 to 2,735 meters, creating a dramatic amphitheater-like setting.
The lake basin formed through volcanic processes that created a natural crater within Mount Tujuh. Over geological time, this depression filled with water to become the lake seen today.
Local fishermen work the lake daily using methods passed down through generations, and their wooden boats and bamboo traps remain a familiar sight across the water. This fishing community has shaped how the lake is used and valued by people living in the surrounding villages.
Reaching the lake requires a three-hour hike from Pelompek village, with local guides available through homestays in the area. The trail is demanding, so starting early in the morning is advisable to make the most of daylight hours.
The water stays cold throughout the year, and despite fallen trees scattered around the basin, the surface remains remarkably clear and free of floating debris. This clarity is surprising given the forested surroundings.
