University of Indonesia, Public university in Depok City, Indonesia
The University of Indonesia is a public institution with its main campus in Depok and another facility in Tanah Abang, Central Jakarta. The Depok site spans multiple faculties, research centers, and a large library set within an extensive, forested environment.
A medical school opened in 1849 under Dutch colonial rule and formed the foundation for the later institution. Following Indonesian independence, the establishment officially gained university status in 1950.
The Depok grounds feature a central building with a distinctive yellow roof inspired by traditional forms, serving as a visual anchor for students. Many people visit the green areas for outdoor study or explore rotating displays about Indonesian language and culture.
The Depok grounds offer visitors clear paths for walking and cycling, while internal shuttles help move between distant buildings. The library and many public areas are open during daytime hours, providing a quiet setting for exploration.
Three quarters of the grounds remain deliberately preserved as forest to protect local ecosystems and offer recreation to the community. The green expanse also attracts birdwatchers and runners from surrounding neighborhoods.
