Ragunan Zoo, Zoo in Jagakarsa, Indonesia.
Ragunan Zoo is a zoological garden in Jagakarsa, a southern district of Jakarta, spreading across 140 hectares of forest and open ground that houses more than 2000 animals from over 300 species. The layout divides into several zones for mammals, birds, reptiles and aquatic creatures, with enclosures scattered between old trees and along ponds.
The founding dates back to 1864 when a Dutch flora and fauna organization opened the first facility in another part of the city. In 1966 the institution moved to the current site and became part of Jakarta city administration.
The name comes from Ragu, the former landowner, and today families from across Jakarta bring their children here to meet native animals and spend weekends in green surroundings. On Sundays the paths fill with school groups, grandparents and children walking between enclosures and pausing at feeding stations to watch orangutans and Komodo dragons.
The paths are wide enough for strollers, and shade comes from tall trees scattered throughout the grounds. It works best to come early in the morning or late afternoon when temperatures cool down and animals become more active.
The Schmutzer Primate Centre within the grounds ranks among the largest facilities of its kind worldwide and displays great apes in naturalistic enclosures with tall trees and water features. Visitors can watch orangutans through glass panels as they climb and play, without bars blocking the view.
