Pondok Kelapa, subdistrict in East Jakarta City, Jakarta, Indonesia
Pondok Kelapa is a neighborhood in Duren Sawit, an eastern district of Jakarta, composed of many residential buildings and small shops. The area contains older houses alongside newer apartment blocks and is crossed by Jalan Casablanca, a main road that connects it with other parts of the city.
The area started as a small village with simple structures built from natural materials but gained its modern character only after Jalan Casablanca was built in the 1990s. This new road connection attracted many new residents and led to rapid growth and development.
The name Pondok Kelapa comes from an old building tradition where people constructed shelters from coconut tree trunks and leaves. This naming origin is remembered in local stories and connects residents to their historical roots.
The area is easy to navigate using buses and small vans and sits near the Kampung Melayu bus terminal for regional connections. The neighborhood has solid local infrastructure with schools and shops that make it simple to manage daily life without long travel times.
Until 1994 the area had no telecommunications network and residents had no home phones, showing how dramatically the place transformed in just a few decades. This rapid shift from an isolated settlement to a well-connected neighborhood is a striking example of Jakarta's urban expansion.
