Pantai Jetis, Coastal beach in Nusawungu, Central Java, Indonesia
Pantai Jetis is a beach with black sand caused by iron-rich minerals and extends along the southern coast of Central Java. The dark shoreline and rolling waves create a distinctive appearance that sets it apart from typical tropical beaches.
The beach was transformed in the 1990s through a coastal protection program that planted numerous Casuarina trees to prevent erosion. This effort shaped the landscape and helped stabilize the shoreline.
Local fishermen use the beach as a gathering place to maintain their boats and prepare nets before heading out to sea, and visitors can watch these everyday activities happening along the shore.
A paved road from the nearby city of Cilacap makes the beach easy to reach by car, and the entrance fee is minimal. The accessibility and low cost make it a straightforward destination for day trips.
The black sand contains natural iron deposits that were once mined commercially before coastal erosion halted the operations. Some sections of the beach still show traces of this former activity.
