Machinefabriek Braat, factory in Java
Machinefabriek Braat is a factory in Gresik, Indonesia, now part of the PT Barata Indonesia industrial complex. The grounds hold old workshop buildings, heavy machinery, and vehicles that together make up a working site with more than a century of metalworking behind it.
The factory was founded in 1901 by Dutch industrialist B. Braat in Surabaya and moved several times before settling in Gresik. It was damaged during World War II and later rebuilt, eventually becoming part of PT Barata Indonesia in 1971.
Gresik has long been tied to heavy industry, and this factory is a visible part of that identity. Workers move through the site with a routine confidence that shows how deeply manufacturing is woven into everyday life here.
The site is an active industrial zone, so expect noise, heavy vehicle traffic, and a strong smell of metal and chemicals throughout the area. It is worth staying on marked paths and keeping alert, since trucks and workers move through the grounds at all times.
Among the factory's more unusual commissions was building special wagons to move aircraft around a military airfield. The same facility also produced railroad bridges, which shows just how wide a range of work it once took on.
