Gresik, Coastal regency in East Java, Indonesia
Gresik is a regency along the northern coast of Java in Indonesia that includes the city of Gresik and surrounding areas. The regency covers coastal territory near Surabaya and also includes the island of Bawean far out in the Java Sea.
The area developed from the 11th century onward as a port for traders from China, Arabia, and Gujarat. Dutch colonial rule later changed the economic role of the port town.

The administration divides into eighteen districts, with main offices located near the city of Surabaya. Visitors should note that the area covers a large stretch and some parts require ferry access.
Two large industrial facilities shape the local economy, including a cement plant that supplies roughly 41 percent of Indonesia's total cement output. The petrochemical plant also contributes heavily to the industrial significance of the region.
