Obira, Mountainous island in North Maluku, Indonesia
Obira is a mountainous island in North Maluku that stretches across rugged terrain and dense tropical forests. The coastal areas serve as the primary settlement zones, while the interior features rivers and varied natural landscapes.
The island came under European control in 1682 when the Dutch East India Company purchased it from the Sultan of Bacan. This marked the beginning of a long period of foreign presence and administration in the region.
The population consists entirely of migrants from Buton, Tobelo-Galela, Ternate, Tidore, Makian, Kayoa, South Sulawesi, and Java regions.
Most visitors reach coastal towns like Laiwui, where accommodation and basic supplies concentrate. The interior is difficult to access, so expect longer travel times and simpler conditions.
A rare swallowtail butterfly species found only here faces danger from habitat loss. Conservation programs work to protect this special insect before it disappears.
