Dinosaur Dreaming, Paleontological excavation site in Inverloch, Australia
Dinosaur Dreaming is an excavation site at Flat Rocks in Inverloch where researchers and volunteers unearth fossils from the Early Cretaceous period. The work focuses on carefully extracting and studying rock formations that hold remains from approximately 125 million years ago.
Australia's first dinosaur fossil discovery happened at this beach in 1903 when William H Ferguson made a significant find. This discovery laid the groundwork for ongoing research at the site that continues more than a century later.
The site draws people from many backgrounds who work side by side during digs and help preserve finds from the distant past. This shared effort connects volunteers and experts in a common mission to uncover and protect fossils.
The site is accessible during certain seasons, with summer months offering the best opportunity to participate in digs. Guided tours are organized through museums and local university partners, allowing structured visits with expert guidance.
The beach reveals over 100 dinosaur footprints that show direct evidence of how these creatures walked and lived here long ago. These tracks come from a time when Australia was still attached to Antarctica and had a very different climate.
