Government House, Official residence in Adelaide, Australia
Government House is a stone building with Neoclassical details located where North Terrace meets King William Road in Adelaide. The structure spreads across two main levels housing both official reception areas and administrative spaces.
The east wing opened in 1840 under Lieutenant Colonel George Gawler and replaced an earlier timber structure. This shift marked the transition from temporary quarters to a permanent official residence.
The stained glass windows inside depict scenes from South Australian heritage and shape how visitors experience the interior spaces. An additional panel was added decades later, expanding this artistic record.
The building displays Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags alongside state and national flags on its flagpoles. Guided group tours are available for schools and community organizations by prior arrangement.
Since 2019 the building has operated as an artist residency, bringing contemporary artistic work into the historic setting. Creators from different disciplines spend time there, creating an active bridge between the past and current cultural practice.
