Government House, Official residence in Adelaide, Australia
Government House is the official residence of the Governor of South Australia, a two-storey stone building in a Neoclassical style at the corner of North Terrace and King William Road in Adelaide. It contains formal reception rooms and administrative spaces across its two main levels.
The east wing opened in 1840 under Lieutenant Governor George Gawler, replacing an earlier timber structure that had served as a temporary official home. Further sections were built over the following decades as the colony grew and its needs changed.
The stained glass windows inside show scenes from South Australian history and can be seen by visitors during guided tours. A later panel was added to continue this visual record of the region's past.
The building is visible from the street, and its flagpoles display the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags alongside the state and national flags. Guided group tours for schools and community organizations are available by prior arrangement.
Since 2019 the building has hosted an artist residency program, inviting creators from different disciplines to spend time working there. This makes it one of the few active official residences in Australia that regularly opens its doors to contemporary artistic practice.
