Bowden development, Urban renewal project in western Adelaide, Australia

Bowden is an urban renewal project spanning more than 16 hectares in western Adelaide, featuring residential apartments, shops, and office spaces located close to the city center. The site combines different building types to create a mixed-use neighborhood where people live and work.

The site was home to the Clipsal manufacturing plant starting in 1936, until the government acquired it in 2008 to begin transforming it into an urban neighborhood. This shift marked a turning point from industrial use to mixed residential and commercial spaces.

The converted Plant 3 and Plant 4 warehouses serve as gathering spaces where residents attend markets, festivals, and community events. These venues demonstrate how former industrial buildings become hubs for everyday social life.

Buildings in the area are designed to meet strict environmental standards, with each structure required to achieve minimum energy efficiency ratings. This approach creates spaces that prioritize sustainability throughout the neighborhood.

The Wardli-ana Tapa Reserve includes a native food garden featuring plants traditionally used by the Kaurna people. This space honors the original connection between the Indigenous community and the land.
