Bakara Conservation Park, Conservation park in Maggea, South Australia
Bakara Conservation Park is a protected reserve in the Murray Mallee region that covers roughly 20 square kilometers of red mallee scrubland. The landscape is dominated by low woody shrubs adapted to dry conditions, with scattered trees creating an open, sparse woodland environment.
The area was first acquired by the South Australian Government in 1983 and officially protected in 1986. The reserve was expanded later in 2009 to include additional land.
The Department for Environment and Water collaborates with local communities to manage fox and rabbit populations while protecting native malleefowl habitats.
The park is located south of Stott Highway along Gold Post Road and operates under strict nature reserve regulations. Access may be limited, so it is wise to check conditions before visiting.
The reserve supports nearly 90 bird species, including more than 60 types of songbirds and smaller woodland birds. Regular visitors have reported sightings of purple-backed fairywrens and chestnut-rumped thornbills roaming the scrub.
