Kangaroo Creek Reservoir, lake in Australia
Kangaroo Creek Reservoir is a large water storage facility in the hills near Adelaide, built with a concrete and rock dam that stands about 65 meters (213 feet) high. The dam extends over 130 meters (430 feet) and holds water from the River Torrens to support the region's water supply.
The dam was built between 1966 and 1969 to support the region's water supply during the growing demand of the post-war era. In recent decades, the structure was upgraded multiple times, most notably from 2016 to 2019, to improve safety against flooding and earthquakes.
The area around the reservoir serves mainly as a place for outdoor walks and nature activities. It connects modern infrastructure with historical elements that became visible during recent construction work, creating a sense of how the landscape changed over time.
Visitors can view the dam from a public lookout point that offers views of the reservoir and surrounding hills. The area is suitable for walking and picnicking, though swimming and boating are not permitted in the water.
During the 2016-2019 modernization work, the historic Batchelor's Bridge was re-exposed after being hidden underwater for decades. This bridge, built over 100 years ago, becomes visible again when water levels drop, offering visitors a tangible connection to the area before the dam was built.
