The garden opened in 1977 as part of South Australia's botanical garden network. It joined established sites like Adelaide Botanic Garden and Wittunga Botanic Garden.
The garden features environmental sculptures along the Lakeside Trail, weaving art into the natural landscape. These installations become part of the walking experience throughout different areas.
The garden opens daily from 8:30 AM with longer hours during warmer months. Parking is available for both cars and larger groups.
Fern Gully holds one of Australia's largest fern collections and provides natural cooling on hot days. The dense vegetation creates a different microclimate from the rest of the site.
