Since March 1989 the house has housed the Attunga Medical Centre, so access follows the working medical facility rather than a private residence.

Otto von Rieben, who bought Attunga in 1905, gave the house to Burnside Council in 1944 on condition that the house and gardens be preserved; he had lived there 37 years. The council accepted unanimously after Mayor P.R. Claridge announced the gift.
