Benacre, Heritage house in Glen Osmond, Adelaide, Australia
Benacre is a two-story stone residence in Glen Osmond featuring Victorian architectural elements and intricate stonework across its expansive grounds. The structure comprises multiple rooms, gardens, and stone outbuildings that remain part of the property.
G.F. Shipster built the house in 1844, but Thomas Graves expanded it in the 1870s with additional rooms and a cellar. Politician John Lewis later acquired the property and left his mark during his ownership from 1906 to 1923.
The residence takes its name from Emily Gooch's ancestral home in Suffolk, connecting it to the British architectural traditions that shaped early South Australian settlement. This link to the English homeland reveals how early settlers carried their cultural roots with them.
The house is not freely accessible, and visitors must obtain permission from the current property owners to enter the grounds. Historical information and heritage listing details can be found through the South Australian Heritage Register.
The property contains historic stone mews structures and once housed a deer park that John Lewis created during his time as owner. This unusual combination of a residence and animal park is rarely documented in the local area.
