Essendon tram depot, Tram depot in Travancore, Melbourne, Australia
The Essendon tram depot consists of three covered sheds containing eighteen roads and six additional outdoor tracks for vehicle storage and maintenance.
The North Melbourne Electric Tramway & Lighting Company initiated operations at this transport facility on October 11, 1906, marking a new era in Melbourne's transit system.
This heritage-registered structure demonstrates early 20th-century industrial architecture with red brick facades and Federation period design elements characteristic of Melbourne's infrastructure.
The depot currently maintains a fleet of 55 trams, including 31 B2 Class and 24 Z3 Class vehicles, serving routes between West Maribyrnong and central Melbourne.
Despite its name referencing Essendon, the depot stands three kilometers away from that suburb, situated on Mount Alexander Road in the Travancore district.
