Essendon tram depot

Essendon tram depot is a maintenance and storage facility for trams in the Travancore suburb of Melbourne. The site contains three covered sheds with eighteen roads and six additional outdoor tracks for storing and servicing vehicles.

The North Melbourne Electric Tramway & Lighting Company opened this facility in 1906, beginning a new chapter in Melbourne's public transport. Since its founding, the site has served as a central hub for operating the city's tram network.

The heritage-listed facility shows how Melburnians have relied on trams as everyday transport for over a century. Its red brick facades and period design reflect the craftsmanship that shaped the city during its industrial growth.

The site is located in an easily accessible area and can be reached by public transport. Keep in mind that this is an active workplace, so access to certain areas may be restricted.

Despite its name, the depot does not sit in Essendon but in Travancore, several kilometers to the west. This gap between the facility's name and its actual location has been a quirk of local geography for many decades.
