Herring Island, Environmental sculpture park in South Yarra, Australia
Herring Island is a small island in the Yarra River in South Yarra featuring walking paths, native plants, and artworks set within the natural surroundings. The site spans several hectares and offers different views of the river and the landscape around it.
The island was created in 1928 by cutting into a basalt quarry site at this location. It was then built up with material from the river to reduce flooding risks in the surrounding area.
The artworks you see here come from well-known international artists and blend directly into the landscape around you. Walking through, you experience a strong connection between contemporary art and the natural environment that invites reflection.
The island is only accessible by a small ferry that runs on weekends and public holidays from December through April. Barbecue areas and picnic spots are available on-site for visitors to use.
The island serves as a refuge for native animals such as bats and various bird species that nest in the eucalyptus and mahogany trees here. Finding this wildlife while viewing artworks makes the visit feel like a genuine encounter with nature.
