Sofitel Melbourne on Collins, hotel in Melbourne, Australia
Sofitel Melbourne on Collins is a hotel occupying the upper floors of a tall tower on Collins Street in central Melbourne. The lobby and guest rooms sit high above street level, with large windows, and the lower floors of the building house a shopping arcade with upscale stores.
The tower was built in the early 1980s as part of a twin-towers development in the heart of Melbourne. The project helped shape this section of Collins Street into the upscale area it remains today.
The hotel sits on the "Paris end" of Collins Street, a stretch lined with upscale boutiques and ornate building fronts that give it a different feel from the rest of the street. Walking this section is a small experience in itself, quite different from the busy retail end nearby.
The lobby is reached by a dedicated elevator from street level, so the main entrance can feel slightly tucked away if you are not expecting it. Once you are oriented, the location puts theaters, shops, and public transport all within easy walking distance.
The hotel runs an artist-in-residence program where artists spend several weeks on site creating work inspired by the city and the building itself. The resulting pieces are displayed throughout the property and rotate regularly, so there is always something new to see on a return visit.
