Battery Point, Historic maritime district in Hobart, Australia
Battery Point is a historic district in Hobart featuring colonial-era homes, narrow lanes, and sandstone structures. The neighborhood sits south of the downtown area and slopes toward the Derwent River waterfront.
The area took its name from a gun battery installed at Princes Park in 1818 as part of Hobart's coastal defense. This fortification remained active until 1878.
The neighborhood grew as a home for harbor workers and colonial administrators who shaped its character. Walking through today, you can feel how the streets and buildings reflect that working maritime past.
Hampden Road is the main entry route and has shops, cafes, and restaurants throughout the neighborhood. You'll also find guest houses and small hotels occupying restored buildings along the way.
Arthur Circus displays a complete circle of cottages built in the 1840s specifically for naval officers. This rare surviving example of an intact row of houses from that era forms a perfect geometric pattern.
