HMAS Huon, Naval shore establishment in Hobart, Australia.
HMAS Huon was a naval establishment situated on the western bank of the Derwent River in Hobart. It contained office buildings, training facilities, and berthing areas that supported daily naval operations in Tasmania.
The installation began in 1911 when the Australian Navy purchased the riverside land for military use. It received the name HMAS Huon in 1942 and continued operations for more than 80 years before closing in 1994.
The facility served as Tasmania's primary naval recruitment center and supported the Hobart Port Division of the Royal Australian Navy Reserve from 1960 onwards.
The site sits along the Derwent River where visitors can view the exterior structures and riverside setting from nearby vantage points. Researching the base's history before visiting helps you appreciate what the different buildings and areas represented during their operational years.
The facility housed patrol vessels used for training, notably the HMAS Bass which operated there from 1967 to 1982. These ships played a central role in preparing naval personnel for active service.
