Snake Island, Island in Corner Inlet, Victoria, Australia
Snake Island is located in Corner Inlet within the Nooramunga Marine and Coastal Park and features diverse landscapes including woodlands, scrubland, heath, freshwater swamps, mangroves, and salt marsh. The terrain varies across the island, creating different habitats in each area.
Since the 1880s, farmers from South Gippsland have brought cattle to the island during winter months by swimming them across a narrow channel. This practice shows how the land served as grazing territory for the local farming community.
The Brataualung clan of the Gunai people called this island Negima and gathered here to celebrate marriages of young couples. The name and its purpose reveal how significant this location was to the local community.
The island is uninhabited and requires boat access to reach it; visitors should bring all supplies and equipment they need. There are no shops, accommodations, or facilities on site, so careful planning is necessary before any visit.
In 1982, the 91 Forestry Squadron built a jetty about 53 meters long between Snake Island and Little Snake Island. The structure was constructed from locally sourced timber and remains a connection between the two islands.
