Evandale, Historic administrative division in Northern Midlands, Tasmania, Australia
Evandale is an administrative division stretching along the South Esk River, located about 18 kilometers south of Launceston in northern Tasmania. The settlement spreads across both riverbanks with homes and buildings scattered throughout the gently rolling landscape.
The area began as Honeysuckle Banks in 1811 when Governor Lachlan Macquarie established a camp on the riverbank below today's town center. The original name faded as the settlement expanded and took on its present form.
The area sits within the territories of the Ben Lomond and North Midlands Nations, particularly the Panninher Clan of Tasmania's Aboriginal peoples. This heritage shapes how locals understand and relate to the land and its waterways.
The area can be explored on foot or by car, with streets that are straightforward to navigate. The post office on High Street serves as a helpful reference point when finding your way around.
The town center contains numerous buildings from the late 1700s and early 1800s that still shape its character today. This collection forms a rare surviving example of colonial-era streetscape in the region.
