Gippsland Lakes Discovery Trail, Multi-day hiking trail in Colquhoun State Forest, Australia
The Gippsland Lakes Discovery Trail is a walking route spanning roughly 36 kilometers between Bruthen and Lakes Entrance. It moves through forest and farming land, passing through different types of vegetation and open areas that show the varied landscape of the region.
The route follows a former tramway built in 1904 to move pink granite from the Mississippi Creek quarry to the lakes area. This transport line was important for the local economy and remained active in various forms for several decades.
The trail passes through lands important to Indigenous peoples, with informational signs along the way that explain local traditions and heritage. Visitors experience a direct connection to these communities and their relationship with the landscape while walking.
Walkers should bring their own drinking water since no water sources are available along the entire path. Planning ahead and carrying enough supplies is essential for completing this longer walk safely and comfortably.
Viewing platforms at the former quarry site let visitors see where granite extraction took place over many years. These spots show how the landscape was shaped by industrial work that has long since stopped.
