The observatory serves as headquarters for the Australian National University Research School of Astronomy and Astrophysics, advancing space research in the Southern Hemisphere.
Visitors can access picnic areas, walking trails, interpretive displays, and attend periodic stargazing events organized by the observatory staff throughout the year.
The 2003 Canberra bushfires destroyed five telescopes and multiple buildings, but the facility recovered to become a partner in the Giant Magellan Telescope project.
