Mount Stromlo Observatory

Mount Stromlo Observatory, Astronomical observatory in Canberra, Australia

Mount Stromlo Observatory is a research facility situated on a hilltop at about 770 meters elevation, equipped with multiple telescopes and scientific instruments for astronomical work. The site includes various buildings and equipment designed to observe the night sky from the Southern Hemisphere.

The facility was founded in 1924 as the Commonwealth Solar Observatory with an initial focus on studying the sun. During the 1940s, research shifted toward stellar astronomy, broadening the scope of scientific work at the site.

The observatory plays a key role in Southern Hemisphere astronomy and hosts researchers from around the world who work on major telescope projects. Visitors can experience firsthand how modern astronomy operates through the facilities and staff interactions available on-site.

The grounds offer visitors picnic areas, walking paths, and educational displays about astronomy. Regular stargazing events are held throughout the year, so check ahead for schedules that match your visit.

Severe bushfires in 2003 destroyed five telescopes and several buildings, but the site was rebuilt and now partners on the Giant Magellan Telescope project. This recovery demonstrates the resilience of the research community.
