Flagstaff Hill Fort

Flagstaff Hill Fort is a military installation on Flagstaff Point in Wollongong featuring brick walls and earth-covered tunnels built into the hillside. The site contains a concrete pit that housed a 6-inch gun and several underground rooms designed for ammunition storage.

The fort was built in the 1870s when Australia wanted to protect its harbor from naval threats like Russia. In 1879, heavy cannons arrived to strengthen the defensive capability of Wollongong Harbour.

The fort shows colonial military design that reflects how Australia tried to protect its harbor from attack in the late 1800s. Walking through the site, you can sense the anxiety people felt about threats from the sea and their efforts to defend their coast.

The fort sits next to Wollongong Head Lighthouse, allowing visitors to explore both military and maritime history in one location. The hilltop position offers good views across the harbor, making the visit rewarding.

The fort had two range finder positions that allowed operators to measure distances and aim at targets on the water with great accuracy. This advanced technology was rare for the time and made the location a key defense point.
