Wollongong Head Lighthouse

Wollongong Head Lighthouse, Automated lighthouse at Flagstaff Point, New South Wales, Australia

Description

Wollongong Head Lighthouse is a white and red concrete structure standing 25 meters above Flagstaff Point and built to resist harsh marine conditions. It sits on a headland that offers sweeping views across the coastline.

History

The structure was built in 1936 by the Commonwealth Lighthouse Service and was the first new lighthouse in New South Wales since 1903. Its construction marked an important development in modern navigation aid infrastructure for the region.

Culture

The lighthouse serves as a popular gathering spot where visitors enjoy coastal views and the surrounding landscape. People come here to experience the seaside environment and take in the scenery from the headland.

Practical

The site is easy to reach on foot and offers good orientation points for visitors. The hilltop location means sturdy footwear is recommended, especially on uneven ground.

Did you know?

At the base of the lighthouse stand three cannons from 1879 that were originally installed as defense against potential Russian naval attacks. These historical guns tell a lesser-known story about the region's military security concerns from that era.
