Balgownie Migrant Workers Hostel

Balgownie Migrant Workers Hostel, Post-war migrant accommodation site in Fairy Meadow, New South Wales, Australia

The Balgownie Migrant Workers Hostel is a remaining accommodation site near Wollongong with three preserved buildings. The structures combine curved steel frames with timber cladding in a practical post-war design.

The site served as housing for immigrants from 1946 to 1978 as part of a large resettlement program following World War II. This period marked a turning point for the region and brought thousands of workers and families from Europe to Australia.

The site reflects the experience of newcomers who lived and worked here during their first years in Australia. Visitors can see how different communities came together and shaped the city's identity.

The buildings now form part of the University of Wollongong's Campus East and serve as student housing and a childcare facility. Access may be limited since it functions as an active university campus.

The curved Nissen huts are based on a military design from 1916 that was originally developed for soldiers and later adapted for civilians. This style was simple to assemble and withstood harsh weather, making it perfect for quick housing solutions.
