Balgownie Migrant Workers Hostel, Post-war migrant accommodation site in Fairy Meadow, New South Wales, Australia
The Balgownie Migrant Workers Hostel contains three remaining structures, including Nissen huts and Quonset huts with curved steel roofs and weatherboard cladding.
Between 1946 and 1978, the hostel served as temporary housing for immigrants arriving in Australia as part of the post-World War II immigration program.
Former residents from different countries established lasting connections within the hostel, contributing to the development of Wollongong's multicultural community.
The site currently operates as student accommodation for the University of Wollongong's Campus East, with Building 201 functioning as a childcare facility.
The preserved Nissen huts, originally designed in 1916 by Canadian Lieutenant Colonel Peter Norman Nissen, demonstrate wartime architecture adapted for civilian use.
