Lake Matheson

Lake Matheson is a lake near Fox Glacier with dark, mirror-smooth waters surrounded by native forest. The surface reflects the nearby mountains so clearly that you see perfect images of the peaks, especially when conditions are calm.

The lake basin formed when Fox Glacier retreated long ago, leaving behind a natural depression. This hollow gradually filled with water and became the body of water you see today.

The lake holds meaning for Māori communities through their traditional stories about this part of the land. Visitors and locals come here to sense the cultural connection woven into the surrounding landscape.

A walk around the lake takes roughly ninety minutes and passes through several viewing spots. Wear comfortable shoes and prepare for changing weather, as this area can be windy and rainy.

The dark brown color of the water comes from natural compounds released by decaying forest plants around the lake. This natural process makes the water particularly good for reflections and gives the lake its distinctive appearance.
