Boolcoomatta Reserve, Protected area in eastern South Australia.
Boolcoomatta Reserve is a protected area in eastern South Australia featuring flat plains, rolling ranges, and rocky outcrops across its landscape. Saltbush and tussock grassland cover most of the land.
The land operated as a sheep station from 1856 until 2006, holding up to 90,000 animals at its peak. Small-scale copper mining supplemented sheep farming throughout its operation.
The Adnyamathanha and Wiljakali peoples maintain their traditional connection to this land. Today it serves conservation and educational purposes for visitors.
The campground is open only between June and September and requires advance booking with complete self-sufficiency for your stay. Bring all your supplies and equipment when you visit.
The reserve harbors threatened bird species including the slender-billed thornbill and thick-billed grasswren that are hard to spot elsewhere. Waterholes lined with river red gums create gathering places where diverse animals come to drink.
