Lucas Heights is a suburb in the Sutherland Shire Council located southwest of Sydney near the Woronora River and Royal National Park. The area features research facilities and residential neighborhoods set within hilly, forested surroundings.
The area received its name from John Lucas Senior, who acquired 150 acres in 1823 and built a water-powered mill for processing Illawarra corn. In the 20th century, it developed into a scientific center with the construction of nuclear research facilities.
The Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation operates research facilities at Lucas Heights, advancing scientific knowledge through various programs and studies.
