State Office Block, Government building in Sydney, Australia
The State Office Block was a government building in Sydney featuring 32 stories that rose 128 meters above the city streets. Its raw concrete exterior and modernist form made it a distinctive presence in the urban landscape until its demolition in 1997.
The building opened in September 1967 as a replacement for earlier administrative structures to meet growing government needs. It briefly held the title of Sydney's tallest building before Australia Square surpassed it the following year.
The building received the local nickname 'The Black Stump' and featured a double-sided New South Wales coat of arms cast in bronze by sculptor Bert Flugelman.
The building was located on Macquarie Street in central Sydney and was easily visible from public spaces. It housed various government departments until its demolition in the late 1990s.
Ken Woolley's architectural design made this building the tallest in Australia from 1965 until 1967, when Australia Square surpassed its height.
