Rosford Street Reserve, Nature reserve in Smithfield, Sydney, Australia
Rosford Street Reserve is a nature reserve in Smithfield, Sydney, covering roughly 20 hectares with open grasslands, woodlands, and recreational spaces throughout. Native Australian plants dot the landscape, while Prospect Creek runs through the area, creating different zones for walking and enjoying the outdoors.
The land along Prospect Creek provided vital food sources for Aboriginal Australians before European settlement arrived in 1883. The creek and surrounding area held significant importance for First Nations peoples as a place to gather plants and hunt.
The reserve is home to Janice Crosio Oval, a sports ground where rugby league, soccer, cricket, and athletics competitions take place regularly. This facility serves as a gathering point for the local sports community and is used by schools and clubs throughout the year.
The reserve provides multiple parking areas and amenity buildings with restrooms throughout the grounds for visitor convenience. A network of walking and cycling paths allows you to explore different sections at your own pace.
The northern section contains a patch of the rare Coastal Swamp Oak Forest community, a plant community that once covered larger areas along coastal waterways. This forest type features trees and plants adapted to wet soils and is now found only in scattered locations.
